In 1998 my mom gave me a book called Sacred Pampering Principles for African American Women by Debreana Jackson Gandy. After reading this awesome book I started to make changes in the salon Hair’s Kay regarding the needs of my clients and the space I needed to create for them to just BE! We then invited Debrena to New Haven to speak with my clients as they were all excited about the principles she wrote about and the positive influences it had on them in as they practiced them.
What came out of that gathering was SISTAHS JAMMIN’ in Jamaica.
We realized at that moment that women needed more conversation and there was no where in New Haven we could get that accomplished. We needed to change their environment. Most women do not give themselves permission to be gentle, loving and kind to themselves. They feel guilty and most times the people around them fill their minds with the guilt of being SELFISH because they want to take care of SELF.
Most thought that by just getting their hair and nails done, that they were pampering themselves.. that’s grooming! Pampering is taking care of your SOUL. Taking the time to Replenish. Breathe. Be Still. Reconnect to self. Connect with others. Spirituality. Letting Go. Be One with self.
In 2000 we made our first trip to Jamaica. 15 years later and I have yet, to fully explain what Sistahs Jammin’ is. The only thing I can say is “ITS AN EXPERIENCE!”
Looking forward to Jammin’ in July
